Canadian Pacific Railroad will be performing maintenance on select crossing signals in Rochester from mid-September through early October. Roads intersecting the crossing signals under repair will be closed during maintenance activities. The public is encouraged to visit www.rochestermn.gov/publicworks<http://www.rochestermn.gov/publicworks> for updates on road closures and detours.

Road Closures for Railroad Crossing Repairs:

· September 19 – 21: 6th Avenue NW from Civic Center Drive NW to 6th Street NW

· September 22 – 24: 4th Avenue NW from Civic Center Drive NW to 5th Street NW

· September 26 – 28: Broadway Avenue from Civic Center Drive NE to 5th Street North

· September 26 – 28: 1st Avenue NW from Civic Center Drive NE to 5th Street NW

· October 3 – 7: West Silver Lake Drive from between Civic Center Drive NE to 7th Street NE

Background:
Stormwater drainage issues along the railroad tracks have caused the railroad signal crossing warning system to intermittently malfunction. Moisture in the electronic detection systems results in the crossing arms lowering and preventing traffic from crossing the tracks regardless of whether or not a train is approaching. This safety feature of the system ensures public safety; however, it can cause needless traffic delays and the public to make ill-advised decisions because they assume the signal is activating for a non-existent train.

Canadian Pacific Railroad has hired a contractor to fix the drainage issues causing the malfunction of the electric systems at the aforementioned crossings. Rochester Public Works crews will be assisting the CP contractor with road repairs. These repairs should provide a permanent fix to the issue and eliminate unnecessary delays to emergency vehicles and public traveling in the area. Schedules are dependent on weather conditions and could change. Updates will be provided and noted at www.rochestermn.gov/publicworks<http://www.rochestermn.gov/publicworks>.
